During the past two weeks, I’ve gotten a lot of Flow Curacao related questions in the ol’ inbox. The result is that I’ve made a Flow FAQ post over at Curacao Connected, where things like package prices, upload and download speeds and contact information are listed.
In the meantime, readers have also started to do some cable spotting and we’re staying on top of the ever evolving service areas. We’ll be the first to get these updated maps, so keep checking back for more info.

Aug 21, 2010 About me, meet curacao, writing

The local soccer competition came to a close last week and I made the brave trip to SDK to cover the game for work. Hubentut Fortuna clinched the championship by beating Centro Barber 1- 0 and to say that I had an interesting evening is severely understating it.
A scalper tried to sell me a ticket below the regular price, I was almost abducted by deranged ants and I generally feared for my life approximately 940234435 times. I did manage to write about it over at Meet Curacao, so feel free to check it out over here.
Oh, sadly, ‘Bachi Bachi’ did not make an appearance this time. That’s probably because he was brutally stabbed in the kidneys after that last game….

What a week. Seriously, what a crazy and unbelievable week. I’m still trying to let it all sink in….
I’m currently typing this post with the aid of a 100 Mb cable connection. I know that a 100 Mb connection is not really a big deal in other countries, but this is Curacao we’re talking about. Up until a few days ago, our best broadband option was a severely overpriced 10 Mb offering from UTS that comes bundled with DNS issues. Before that, it looked like we were going to be stuck with a 2 Mb package for ever. So how did we get so far in such a short time you ask? Read More..

So, that 100 Mb Columbus rumor appears to be legit. Someone sent me a screen shot of a speed test that appeared to be taken on the Flow Curacao website. The download speed clocked in at 98.44 Mb, which has left me a blubbering mess. Another reader sent a tip that his friend is currently testing the 100 Mb connection somewhere in Dominguito and if that’s the case….let me officially start to beg so I may also test that connection…

After complaining that I still did not get the 10 Mb UTS upgrade, a reader left a tip that they may upgrade you without emailing or phoning to let you know that the changes have been made. I proceeded to do a speed test and wouldn’t you know it, I got upgraded. Wonderful.
You know, I’m not trying to nit pick or anything but is it that hard to send me an email, telling me that you’ve upgraded the package?
But hey, it’s UTS we’re talking about, so nothing will go smoothly. I’m still experiencing the DNS issues and while it’s great to have the free calling and the higher download speeds, the constant connection issues are still driving me clinically insane.
If you’re also experiencing DNS issues with your Adsl, check these alternative options over at Curacao Connected. I personally went back to OpenDns and so far…so good….

I covered a local soccer game in the weekend, a play-off match between Centro Barber and Hubentut Fortuna. The match-up was especially interesting when you consider that Hubentut was part of the Chippie Polar Cup back in May and that I interviewed Percy Pasial – one of the higher-ups at Centro Barber – just a few months prior to that.
The stands turned out to have more action than the game itself, as a group of rowdy Barber supporters constantly yelled at the referee and the players. They were calling the ref ‘Bachi Bachi’, which may be his nickname or some sort of cruel inside joke. Either way, it sounded funny and I’m considering callaing my next pet Bachi Bachi.
I actually feared for Bachi Bachi’s life because he seemed to be giving Fortuna the calls and those fans were not happy, which is a horrible understatement. They laid into him very strongly, which was very awkward when you consider that a lot of 4 year olds were present. Either way, Barber won the game (1-0) and it’s probably the only reason why Bachi Bachi is still alive right now. Read More..

School will be starting next week and while a part of me is happy that I don’t have to make tests and homework anymore, I do miss the relative ease that comes attached to the “school life”. I wrote about it for Meet Curacao and XpEdition Magazine, so check it out here.
Oh, and the part about working 93458239 hours a week is not an exaggeration.

Since UTS announced their new 10 MB combo package, the comments, tips and emails keep coming in. Some of the more interesting stuff included a tip that Santa Barbara will be launching in September and that Columbus (CCC/Flow) will offer an ultimate package that includes a 15 MB connection, unlimited calling and 256 channels for 200,- guilders a month. There’s also talk of a 100 MB connection…..which basically has me punching walls all day in disbelief…

There’s big news today in the local tech world. UTS – which is definitely feeling the heat from Flow Curacao and the Santa Barbara Utilities – is offering a 10 MB ‘Double Play’ package. If you apply this week, you can upgrade to a 10 MB Adsl connection and get 24/7 unlimited calling for 175,- guilders a month. You’ll need to apply at the UTS website and if you don’t manage to do so this week, the price of the package becomes 225,- guilders a month.
If you’re already an Adsl customer, the deal sounds like a n0-brainer. You go from a 1 or 2 MB connection to a 10 MB connection – with unlimited calling – for only 25,- guilders extra a month. But there are some negatives as well. The unlimited calling is only to other fixed lines, you’ll need to extend your contract for another two years and the deal is not available for new customers.
But hey, considering that my contract was already renewed back in May, I might as well make the jump. That said, you can read more about it over at Curacao Connected.

There’s a reason that I write columns like this one. It’s may way of coping with (inevitable) disappointment. Holland gave it their all today against Spain but in the end, it just was not enough. I could complain about the referee, I could complain about the corner kick that wasn’t given right before the goal, I could complain about the goal itself, but I’m pretty drained.
In the end, the better team won and when you miss chances like Arjen Robben missed, you just know that it’s not going to be your day. It was a nice run all the way to the finals but after having hope for 116 minutes, this was the saddest paragraph I have ever had to write.
